DIY: Spring Wreath

Friday, February 26th, 2016

spring trends

It’s DIY time, and with some new wooden monogram designs here at IO, our team decided to get crafty. One of our new designs includes a family name and initial combo that would look perfect on a wreath. There are so many themes when it comes to wreath making so don’t dwell too long on the design. For this DIY, flower pots were selected as the main theme and the décor of the wooden monogram followed. A crafters dream spray adhesive was discovered at Hobby Lobby that will adhere scrapbook paper to wood. With this design, use a natural or light stain and apply sparingly. This will allow the etched name to be seen on your wreath.

Materials used: Vine wreath, moss, artificial leaf vine, 3 mini flower pots, 3 stems of artificial flowers, floral wire, glue gun, spray adhesive, scrapbook paper (2 sheets), x-acto knife, cutting board, and wood stain.

Start with the vine wreath. First, glue the moss and leaves to the wreath. Next, wire the pots to the wreath and fill them with moss and flowers.

Cut scrapbook paper to fit the area inside the wooden square (you do not want glue to contact the wood that will be stained). Spray the adhesive all over the back of the printed paper and immediately press onto the cut-out letter, one section at a time. Smooth over the letter surface with fingers to secure the glue to the wood and allow to dry a few minutes.

Flip the wooden monogram to the back side on the cutting board and use the X-acto knife to cut off excess paper around the single initial. Once done, stain unfinished wood with a thick paper towel or rag.

Attach the wooden monogram to the vine wreath with floral wire. Your DIY is finished and ready to hang for your guests and family members to admire!

With creative juices flowing, two more wooden cutouts were painted, stained, sanded and attached to wreaths. Pictured on the left, a vine wreath simply decorated with dried flowers and leaves wired on. Pictured on the right, a foam form covered with moss and all decorations secured with floral pins only! Super easy!

Spring Fashion Trends 2016

spring trends

The temperatures here in Alabama are saying spring has sprung! In light of the warmer weather, let’s explore a few of this year’s trends. For those of you not in Alabama, spring will come…we promise! Many of the trends have carried over from fall, just in spring colors and lighter-weight fabrics.

We have two colors of the year for 2016: Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue, which are cool and calm pastels. Play around mixing these pastels with navy, red, a rich peach/orange, or even summer white. Serenity Blue and Rose Quartz are complemented by silver or gold accessories. Keep it simple at the neckline with a classic personalized piece, or play it up with fringe. Get creative with a textured bracelet stack, and don't forget your purse! Our Lauryn sling and Addison tassel handbag are the perfect grab-and-go choices this spring.

Boyfriend jeans and plaid… Oh My! These two trends are so versatile and look great with our vintage collections as well as our silver and gold collections. Our Worth the Tassel necklace in vintage silver and our Rhapsody leather cuff look great with an oversized plaid shirt and tank. Not feeling the grunge look? Dress up your boyfriend jeans with a streamline jacket and our silvertone Best Fringe Forever necklace for a street savy style.

If jeans don't appeal to you then take a look around and you will find dresses in full swing… pun intended :). Showcase layers of jewelry and don't be afraid to mix metals. Bright gold combined with vintage gold bring this basic dress to life!

Get to know Kathy, a former working mom from Woodlawn, TN

Friday, January 29th, 2016
Kathy Q&A

What is your occupation outside of Initial Outfitters?

I am so excited to say as of September 2015, IO is my job!! I formally worked for the Federal Government and juggled both jobs for 3 years before being able to quit and focus solely on IO. As a Family Readiness Support Assistant for the U.S. Army, my job was rewarding yet predictable and lacked a challenge.

What was the first exciting thing that you did with your IO money?
Christmas 2012 was the first time that I did not use credit cards to purchase gifts. It felt amazing to have a debt-free Christmas and we have continued to do so ever since!

What is the most significant thing you have done, or are planning to do, with your IO money?
Besides paying off two credit cards, the most significant was taking my entire family of 12 to Disney courtesy of IO…PRETTY AMAZING! Oh, did I mention I was able to quit my government job???? Thought so 😉

What do you “get” personally from Initial Outfitters that you don’t “get” from your other occupation?
I “get” to make my day and my job how I want it to be instead of someone else dictating my agenda. The feeling of satisfaction and excitement when someone succeeds, are overjoyed with their rewards, or simply just excited about their purchase gives me more joy than I can even explain.

How do you feel that you are able to make a difference with your IO business?
I am providing an opportunity that allows moms to stay home with their children, hostesses a means to earn tons of rewards for little to no cost, and meals for our Charlie’s Lunchroom children who might not otherwise have nourishment and ministry in their lives. I have also made a difference for my family by paying off bills, providing vacations and having my daughter join my team.

Valentine’s Gift Guide

How we're styling FUR

Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate relationships and family, and usually involves a gift of some kind. Memories of decorating paper bags at school followed by carefully selecting Valentine cards and attaching candy to pass out to friends is engrained in our memories. There was time and thought put into making sure the day was special. Just because we grow up doesn’t mean we should lose the personal aspect of gift giving. In fact, there are personalized gifts such as jewelry and bags that last longer than that piece of candy and used more than the decorated paper bag. From little girls and teenagers to moms and grandmoms, there is something for everyone in your life, as featured in the gift guide below. Give her a gift engraved with a special date, coordinates to a special place or her initials and it will show her time and thought was put into her gift this year. Remember, when you make it personal, you make it meaningful.

Christmas Memories with Jim Storbeck

Alicia and I with our nieces, Ashley and Allie. 1995

My home in Iowa.

For those of us who grew up in the northern half of the country, Christmas time just doesn’t seem right without a blanket of soft snow on the ground. I grew up in a pretty white house in Cedar Falls, Iowa with my sister Rhonda, Mom, Dad, and Gigi our French poodle. Each year Dad would put out extra bird feeders and corn cobs for the snow birds and squirrels who liked to hang out on our back deck.

With it often being too cold to go outside we would play cards or sing carols. Mom was a gifted pianist, Dad played the banjo, harmonica, and guitar, and I also played the guitar. Rhonda would bring her two little girls who would dance and sing along to the music (One would grow up to be IO’s Marketing Project Manager Ashley!). Then we would pile into the car, find a radio station playing familiar carols, and drive around to see the Christmas lights…and yes we use colored lights in the north which take on a magical appearance when reflecting off the sparkling snow. Dad would drive slow as the roads would be icy. Deer and rabbits would be scurrying all around and us kids would try to be the first to notice.

When we got back inside and out of our cold jackets and boots, Mom would set up a pot of hot tea for the adults and start baking her famous peanut butter chocolate star cookies. I will always claim that these were the first soft, chewy, cookies before soft cookies became mainstream. She would lay out waxed paper on the breakfast table where I’d be sitting and carefully place the hot cookies to cool. Mmmm. To keep us kids occupied and our hands off the cookies she would let us lick the mixing blades. Next, she would quickly mix up cups of hot chocolate with marshmallows. Cookies and hot chocolate are the real deal folks, no wonder I’m crazy about chocolate. Later in life I won second prize in a baking competition for this recipe. It’s easy but oh so good. Enjoy!

Chocolate Star Cookies

1/2 cup margarine (do not melt)
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg (beat well)
2 Tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 and 3/4 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda, scant (almost full)
1/2 cup salt, scant (almost full)
1 bag Brach’s chocolate stars

Beat together margarine, p.b., and sugars. Add egg. Mix together flour, backing soda, and salt. Add to mixture with milk and vanilla. Mix well.

Roll in balls (about 1 inch)

Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 min. Immediately press a star into the top of each cookie. Let cool before removing from pan.
